After suffering from a bout of poliomyelitis when he was a child, Zhu Jiankang (Qi Yuwu) is left with legs of uneven lengths and walks with an abnormal gait. His foster mother Fang Mudan (Xia Lingling) is a cabaret singer at a bar. She is fiercely loyal to those she loves, and has always treated Jiankang as her own son.
Her own daughter Cheng Kaixin (Fiona Xie), is a bright and lively girl who has loved Jiankang like her own big brother since young. Jiankang is grateful to Mudan and her daughter for their care and loyalty. Therefore even as a child, he vows to work hard for a good career and take care of them for life.
Jiankang’s good friend is a playful drifter Lin Jinsheng (Pierre Png). Like Jiankang, he has also harboured feelings for Kaixin since childhood. Alas, Kaixin is unaware of it all. The subtle relationship between the trio starts to change with the appearance of Ming Xiaoyan and Ding Wenhui.
Ming Xiaoyan (Belinda Lee) is an orphan from China while Ding Wenhui (Chen Hanwei) is a charming and successful young Singaporean man. Xiaoyan came to Singapore in search of relatives and puts up at Jinsheng’s home temporarily. She gradually falls in love with Jinsheng.
Wenhui works in an advertising firm. He and Kaixin fall for each other and become a couple
When their relationship comes to light, Jinsheng and Jiankang are devastated. Jiankang tells himself that his handicap will never put him in the same league as the charismatic Wenhui, and thus silently wishes them well. Jinsheng is heartbroken as well. Dejected, he unwillingly accepts Xiaoyan’s feelings but continues to be indifferent towards her.
The relationship between Kaixin and Wenhui is not smooth sailing. Wenhui comes from a traditional and conservative family. His parents are prejudiced against Kaixin for her background and object to their relationship. At this point, Kaixin discovers Jiankang’s deep feelings for herself. But with Wenhui treating her with such sincerity, Kaixin is put into an emotional dilemma. Finally, Jiankang backs out of the love triangle with the excuse that he is going to locate his birth mother, and disappears. He turns up half a year later, and starts his career under the encouragement of his foster mother.
